Emerald trend 2013

A trend that seems to be a staple for 2013 is Emerald, you're seeing it in fashion in design, paint colours, you name it. Now Emerald can be a very flattering colour as it is in the jewel tones which is quite flattering on a lot of skin tones. I always love jewel tones as it somehow brings a special element to the design of the the ensemble or whatever item it may be. It's forgiving. Now in every trend it must be done right, it's already a colour that can stand on it's own without an added element although if you don't mind being a showstopper there's always sequins; maybe in a pattern or uniquely draped, not in a whole pants suit (separates) keep it crisp.

Emmys 2012

Yes I know this is late and I'm sorry about that but I'm giving you my spin on the Emmy Red Carpet looks. There were trends of sheer layered over solid, neons, sparkle and wrong hair/styling for ensemble. I have no idea as to why it is believed that messy dos work with architectural or whimsical pieces it just ends up looking like shaggy the dog, sorry but it's true. I know girls want to look romantic and whatnot but it is sometimes best to stick with more kept, sleek looks with a dress that has texture, structure, or whimsical it's sometimes to cliché. Example of styling gone bad (sorry guys you are beautiful women but this looks wrong)

Also not because it's in fashion doesn't mean you have to wear it and hire a stylist that knows what looks good on you, there were a lot of what is she wearing moments on that red carpet, it's very difficult to perfect a look for every award show but with a good stylist that does their research to ensure that you are also not wearing the same dress as many have before or on the same night is a keeper. Being in the public eye is a very critical business that's why you also have to listen to your gut and if you think you look like a bird then speak up because how could celebrities look in the mirror before they leave for a show and not see what all the fashion critics see as soon as they set foot on that red carpet that'll have to be a serious case of denial.

DRESSES GONE WRONG

It come down to ill fit, colour washing you out, dated looks, looks that are too young or old for you ans the mere fact that dress for the occasion.

Coveted September 1

Ah September, you fill my life with such splendour, the glossy pages of magazines are filled to capacity with all things fashion and all things current. The Vogue September Issue was an eyeful this year 916 pages of fall fashion ahhhhhh with Lady Gaga on the cover with a fro and a patchwork mermaid dress. To top off my excitement there's Fashion Night Out and Fashion Week. I honestly haven't seen all the featured designers and I'm slowly going through them to take all the details and comments in but I have seen a few that I've liked so far....

DVF

A lot of bright colours, colour inserts creating pattern and dimension, her signature beautiful prints, loved.

Calvin Klein did a classic black and white collection.

10 Crosby Derek Lam, I love how fresh and young yet sophisticated his pieces are and how well they look put together. I would wear these looks in a heartbeat.

Belstaff's use of shades of cool earth tones as they weren't that saturated or rich in colour was a nice touch to the collection it was easygoing so well made I loved this collection I mean the whole thing not one piece I didn't like. Oh the coats and the dresses and the flowy pants. LOVED

CFDA's Swarovski Award winner for womenswear Altuzarra. Let's face it Joseph Altuzarra is a genius when it comes to fashion, his strong edgy, sophisticated woman portrayed is desired by all who love fashion as the models hit the runway. At the end of the day if any designers collection has left you wanting to be the woman or just be her friend you have done your work well. Because fashion is to be desired.Altuzarra Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear

In recent years I htink Escada has really stepped it up a notch and deserve to be recognized for it. This collection was clean and fun, loved it. Not to mention youthful and fresh.

To be continued guys......

Chronicles @ UTT continued

Any designer will tell you that the process is a long and difficult one especially with a time crunch hanging over your head. The freedom to express is one thing but after all the research and design, having to think and rethink the reasoning behind your design (is it too literal, will it be translated to the consumer well, are the colours current along with the lines). After this semester I so understand why so many designers or creative people on the whole loose it every now and again. It's like a debate team in your head. You're always second guessing you decisions and wondering if it's all making any sense.
I truly felt like my mind was on overload and I tried my best to stay calm as I found myself having to explain what was taught to us to my peers that I was set up in groups. I felt mentally drained and like I got a little taste of what it must be like to be on a panel that may not particularly see things your way and having to give and take a little to make a deadline and make the team work proceed.

Lady Gaga for September Issue Vogue

On the cover of vogue yet again for the most coveted time of the year in magazine world the September Issue. And what a great way to celebrate but by putting the most fearless and fiercest fashionista there is Lady Gaga. We have to give it to her I mean the woman will wear Haute Couture to run errands. She's changed the vision of every designer and has made their fashion fantasies a reality wearing their most out of the box creations like us regular folk wear a jeans and t-shirt. I think the picture speaks volumes.

Street Fashion

Who is she, you may ask, Caroline Issa Tank Magazine's executive fashion director . I myself never heard of her until a little while ago, but I'm always drawn to accidental fashionistas, the average person's style captured and reviewed to reveal pairings of quirky and unconventional items that make cute ensembles. Women after my own heart where fashion is concerned. Mixing and matching, thrift store items with brand names and designers and instead of letting the clothes wear you, make it your own.

The most stylish people are often those who don't follow trends but go by their own rules, they may buy current items but they don't let it be a "must have". A few celebrities that go against the grain and I love their style are, Gwen Steffani, Nicole Richie; the list can go on but I can't think of any others at he moment.

Fashion is always changing, details are always moving around the body, erogenous zones, preppy, bohemian, classic, any style dress can be mixed and matched in one wardrobe though some stick to one, most like to mix it up according to mood.

Have fun with it. Fashion doesn't always have to be taken seriously, don't be afraid to mix prints, take chances. Clothes are a form of expression.

Almost There

It's coming to an end, the diploma segment of my schooling and it's nerve racking. What if I fail some random subject that doesn't allow me to move on? My Fashion History exam was... well it was interesting. I guess I'll have to see how that turns out as it will allow me to also do the workshop for the other segment of fashion history, contemporary fashion. I am so grateful for the opportunity, I don't want to let anyone down, but my fate lies in their hands now. So only time will tell what is to come. Wish me luck guys

Nicole Miller on All on the Line with Joe Zee

I know I know, I'm late on the whole "All on the line with Joe Zee" band wagon but in my defence juggling school and family life is quit time consuming. It's such and educational show for me as I'm on a little island and not so exposed to the fashion world as I'd like to be. It was a confirmation to me on seeing this episode that and fashion house can be at a loss of what to do to move forward and make their names credible among the younger demographic. I feel a little intimidated too. But talent as I've experienced cannot be contained and if persistent enough it will be given it's time to prove itself worthy in the spotlight. As beautiful as the fashion world is, it is unpredictable and can reject you faster than it accepted you as the journey to recognition is a long and difficult one. Ah but when you're there I'm sure it tingles "poetry in motion" I always say. It's like a forbidden affair with a triple layered chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream when you're on a strict diet of nothing but vegetable, fruits and water. It woos you into it's seductive lair of shoes, handbags, coats, dresses .....and then you're hooked for life.

Nicole Miller's Spring collection was pure genius, it was edgy and cool, youthful; it had the ooo factor. You women know what I mean, when you see the first look you go ooo that's cute, then to the next look and ooo love that. The mix of fabrics and print were clever and interesting. The same for her pre-fall and fall collections. Personally a designers collection is supposed to make you want to be the girl they portray and I thin she nailed it this year. Thanks to Joe Zee's guidance. Well you be the judge http://www.nicolemiller.com/

A Note to All Women

Hello my fashion inspired and art loving people, who think beyond the box that the world has conformed for us to be caged in. It is inevitable that to be relevant you must be seen, heard and most importantly look fabulous at all times. I had an interesting conversation with a woman whose knowledge and wisdom I admire and it was amazing how much we thought about certain issues in the same light. It's amazing that though the world is so big and we are just one in billions of people inhabiting this planet we still find ourselves thinking we're the only person that thinks and feels the way we do about things but there are so many people just like us out there.
Being a woman I have no idea why I am so often baffled at how petty and mean women can be to each other. Why is it when a girlfriend of ours looks good we bite our tongues or make a joke about it instead of the truth "you look nice today". Is it really that hard? The other common reaction is to giggle and talk about her with another friend. I live by the words that "women need to support each other/ stick together". We live in a world of gorgeous skinny models and celebs plastered on magazines and it's beautiful yes and we want to be that woman but we aren't all of the same genes and some of us have curves and so what, take pride in that and use that. Keep healthy, exercise, dress for your shape, brush your hair, wear make up if you like. It's amazing that when you take pride in how you look and you look good, you feel good. Life's too short and youth is also too short to go about looking frumpy and bashing those who try. We are all gorgeous, we just need to give ourselves the opportunity to shine.

The Met Gala 2012

I always look forward to this event every year as it is one of if not the only event where the sky's the limit with fashion choices. I must admit I was a little disappointed this year, but fashion is taking a beating as head designers have changed over the past 2 years and well whatever other reasons unforeseen it was what it was. However, there were still a list of favourites that I'd like to acknowledge in their greatness.

Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton didn't disappoint as Cate  Blanchett looked phenomenal in this black Ostrich feathers.

Another favourite of mine was Leighton Meester and reason being that she is usually on the "not to do" list when it comes to styling and on this night I must say she went up on my list wearing this beautiful sort of champaign/nude coloured Marchesa.

Diane Kruger wore this beautiful purple gown by Prada with ostrich feathers to the bottom of the dress which gave it such a dramatic feel, it was a little ill fitting to the top area but none the less gorgeous.

Kate Bosworth took a youthful fresh appeal to the night wearing a twist to the little black dress by Prada, which was completely covered in Ostrich feathers

Now don't get me wrong I'm not usually a fan of this designer but I have to give him the credit this time. Jessica Alba looked stunning in this gold draped dress by Michael Kors. She looked like a goddess and what woman doesn't want that.

Bright colours at these events always stay with me, but they have to be done tastefully and I must say quite a few celebs did this. My faves of the night with this particular style were Emma Roberts in Escada, January Jones in Atelier Versace, Katherine McPhee in Elie Saab, Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier and Emily Blunt in Calvin Klein.

And last but not least the handful that wore the elegant and sophisticated sleek look; Gisele Bundchen in  black, beaded and belted gown by Givenchy, Rooney Mara a black lace belted dress also by Givenchy.

P.S: I don't care what anyone says but they are who they are and aren't afraid of what the media has to say and I love them for it so here's to Mary Kate Olsen in The Row, Rhianna in Tom Ford and Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen. Cheers to you.
